What's Left To Eat?

If you are a newcomer to the 'clean' diet it can initially feel as though there is nothing left to eat. I had one client tell me she was tired of just having turkey lunchmeat to eat.

The truth is that there are lots and lots of things left to eat. Going forward I will be including foods that are only gluten free, dairy free, soy free, grain free and nightshade free, and I will refer to those foods as 'clean', but if you are only avoiding Gluten and Dairy, than you will have even more foods available to you.

Some easy things to remember:

All meat without added ingredients is clean.

ground beef
ground turkey
whole hen
steak
pork chops
ribs
pork loin
roast
ham
chicken breast, wings, etc
.... You get the idea!

All seafood without added ingredients is clean.

Salmon
tuna
cod
catfish
shrimp
scallops, etc
.... you get the idea!

All vegetables without added ingredients are gluten free, dairy free and grain free. Some vegetables are soy like soybeans, Edamame beans. Some vegetables are nightshades which include:

tomatoes
eggplant
potatoes (except sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are not a nightshade.)
peppers: bell peppers, hot peppers. Onions and black pepper are not nightshades.

Watch for nightshades in products where there are added ingredients. *spices

Other common nightshade foods include:

ketchup
pimento
hot sauce
tomato sauce
red pepper flakes

All fruit is clean with the exception of goji berries and I've seen blueberries show up on some list although I've never had a client who stated blueberries bothered them. If they bother you, just avoid them.

All nuts and seeds are clean except soybean nuts.

All oils are clean unless you are avoiding grains and soy. In that case you would want to avoid corn oil and soybean oil. Any oil blend should always be checked for soybean oil as should all Vegetable Oil as it is usually made up of soybean oil.

Don't forget about some of these clean foods that do not always make the list above like olives, artichokes, mushrooms, and water chestnuts.

The summation is that most of our foods, without added ingredients, are clean and so that is why so many health advocates encourage you to eat whole fresh foods.

There are many frozen vegetables and fruits without added ingredients to choose from. There are even many canned foods; just be sure to rinse well before you prepare them and I would encourage you to eat them sparingly if you can.
